I’M STILL WORKING ON MY GRIME BLOGGERS INTERVIEW PROJECT !
SHOUT OUT TO ITS THE LAST BOSS
1) HEY ITS THE LAST BOSS HOW ARE YOU TODAY?
I’m okay thanks, enjoying chilling in the sun and at the moment I’m basically planning my dissertation and events modules for next year. It’s going to be a long summer of planning and partying…
WHO DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST IN THE GRIME SCENE AT THE MOMENT ?
Erm? Good question… I think for me DJ Magic (Dirty Canvas & No Hats No Hoods) and Elijah & Skilliam (Butterz) do a lot and get hardly any recognition from the media side of things and and I would say they are the ones I follow the most. With Grime I tend to stay away from the MC side of things.
Grime to me has always been amazing instrumental club music and besides most of the MC’s (apart from a few) just seem to chat a lot of rubbish but can never back it up without selling out or clinging on to one hit in the scene…
Oh yeah Rude Kid’s album ‘Are You Ready?’ is amazing by the way, go cop that for sure if you haven’t.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BLOG ABOUT GRIME ?
Like I said I follow the more instrumental/experimental side of Grime music. I love all the hype stuff but I love the fact it has a lot of styles and variations within itself as a scene and as genre of music… I blog about all music to be honest but Grime always pops up and has been getting a lot better in terms of production and support the last few years…
HAVE YOU WITNESSED RIVALRY BETWEEN GRIME BLOGGERS ?
I wouldn’t say Rivalry but I’ve seen certain people on twitter etc claiming they are the only ones capable of writing properly about Grime which is ridiculous. I think the internet is perfect for people to say stuff and hide behind a front.
Its when you meet people in the flesh you get a real idea of who they are and their values etc. But yeah with regards to blogging I think people will always be kicking off because your basically trying to beat each other for views/sponsorships etc
I see your writing for vice and mtv the wrap up, hows that ?
That’s going really well, I’ve been a behind as late with uni work piling up and trying to move house and having no internet so I’m looking blog a lot more for these types of companies real soon.
Big up to JP for letting me do interviews and also to Vice for always hooking me up stuff to blog about. I’ve also had so many offers from other companies because my name is involved with my blog/articles etc so yeah its going really well.
Do you think networking is a key thing ?
Yeah at the moment because I’m leaving next year and hopefully moving to London if all goes well. Through my blog I’m trying to get as many contacts for my phone and email as I can. Its nice when people also see the work your doing and want to send a quick email/tweet etc.
Its a nice touch and I think for me, why turn down friendship. In this day and age too where everyone wants to become a celebrity so to speak we need to be individuals and make sure we stand out and that means having as much on our CV as we can and also bare people on your blackberry haha… But yeah networking when your starting out is vital.
What do you think the grime scene need’s but what does it lack ?
To be honest I think its needs more support in general from scene itself, the media and everyone involved. The scene is always seems to be divided on everything from producers, MC’s, shows etc… I don’t really think this will ever happen.
Its street music, it was born out of people being frustrated and wanting to vent in a aggressive but controlled way so whether something like that your never going to be all happy and getting like the House/Electro scenes etc
To be honest though, Grime will always be looked after by the underground. It has stronger roots then a lot of other scenes and as long as people are into the radio shows, attending the raves and most importantly buying the music then it will be good for a while.
Also I think the scene is lacking raves outside of London especially in the Midlands. I would love to see a FWD>> or Dirty Canvas up here. We do get Grime artists or DJ’s but its always on a mixed genre bill.
Is there any other blogs your liking ?
The main blog I love and follow is BNTL because it has such a range of stuff on there and cover all underground goodness and also provides freebies and exclusive looks at new clothing lines weeks before its out in store/online… But yeah there’s a lot of blogs bookmarked on my laptop.
What are your views on the grime forum ?
I don’t really look at it to be honest. I’ve always stayed away from forum’s. Mainly due to the fact someone no matter what you say or do will pick a fight with you just for the sake of it.
Any last words ?
Yeah, just wanna say thanks for having me on here and also big ups to all the people blogging about underground music etc. Keep doing what your doing.
